I do a lot of writing! I am a chronic notetaker so I am constantly buying notepads. As I like to try different ones this is my actual first Moleskin pad. First impressions, it was as described and well packaged to avoid damage during shipping. The rating features offered here on Amazon include “Sturdiness” and “Durability” which are remarkably similar. The pad is tightly bound and contains a small pocket on the back cover. There is an elastic band to keep the pad closed while not in use. There is no bookmark ribbon and I suppose you could use the band but then you wont be able to keep the pad closed when not in use. Although it isn’t a huge deal to flip through pages to find where you left off, I like the page noting feature. The paper is very lightweight and even with my first day’s use I noticed some edge curling while I was writing. So far I have only used a ball point pen. Normally I write with a fountain pen but I am concerned that the weight of the paper will prevent me from using a fountain pen as I would only be able to write on one side of the paper to avoid bleed through. No issues though with ball point pen. All in all a nice little pad. Only 240 pages so it won’t last long but for the price it isn’t a bad purchase.

I was always a fan of Moleskine notebooks (especially to be used as art journals), but grew tired of the hardcover quickly and ditched their journals for years. When I discovered they made a more flexible cover, I immediately purchased the Large size with Squared pages. I use this notebook to write down daily tasks, ideas/thoughts, and to sketch in – it’s pretty much a free flow planner, I guess. I did use a typical planner (personal size Filofax with week on 2 pages), but have ditched that since using this different method of keeping track of things. The paper that is used in this notebook is of great quality – I tend to use marker pens and I love that they don’t bleed through the pages. I’ve been using this notebook for about a month and it has held up exceptionally considering how often I am using it throughout the day. It’s the perfect size and doesn’t weigh my bag down (unlike my Filofax – perfect size, but such a burden on my shoulder). Because of this, I bring my notebook with me everywhere; I definitely recommend this if you plan to do the same!

For more than than five years I’ve been using the Moleskine Large Squared Soft notebooks to keep field notes while I start-up, test, and troubleshoot lighting controls on construction sites and in operating buildings. I fill up about six books a year. They fit in a cargo pant pocket so the notebook is always at hand without having to be always in-hand. The binding is flexible enough to allow the book to be laid open at any page. The bookmark ribbon and elastic closure band are both useful. The soft cover is nicely flexible, but is durable enough for my work. (I tried the hard cover version. It was very uncomfortable in the cargo pocket with the range of motion I go through in a day.) Being left-handed, I found spiral bound notebooks of the same size difficult to write in “over the hump”. Over several weeks in the pocket, the spiral would get deformed , making the making it harder to open the book or turn through its pages; not a problem with the Moleskine. These notebooks are DEFINITELY LEFT-HAND FRIENDLY. Only two small complaints in over five years of use: first, the bookmark ribbon just fell off of one of my notebooks (that’s how I figured out that the bookmark ribbon is really useful), and second, print quality of the grid has been variable in the past. Ideally the grid should be faint, fine lines that compete with my writing for the eye’s or the copier’s attention. At times in the past the grid has been darker and heavier. This hasn’t caught my attention in the last couple of years, so maybe quality control has already taken care of it. The notebooks are a little pricey compared to a spiral-bound, but if you need or want durable and useful, it is value for the money.

Even though we seem to be entering a new age, with iPads, GalaxyTabs, ultra-thin laptops, and smartphones, I still really enjoy putting pen to paper. Ever since I started working, I have always kept a notebook with me to keep track of my projects, or just to jot down anything that I think is worth remembering. I started using the Moleskin notebooks about 7 years ago, when my father gave me one as a gift, and I have used one ever since.I really like the soft cover, and the quality of the paper. Even the color of the paper is soothing to look at. It has a very convenient flap inside the back cover to stash receipts and other paper. I personally prefer the graph / grid paper because it helps me with sketches of processes. It has a little cord to keep your place, and a cord that wraps around so the book doesn’t pry open when placed in a bag for transport… yes, it is perfect for me….
