   I wanted to try a canvas textured roll of photo “paper” to try and print panoramas. There were no instructions in the box, but one side has a slightly “grabby” feel that I assumed was from the coating. I was wrong! That side will get you smeared ink and a surreal result! (See blurred photo). The smoothest side is the one to print on. The results are very good for a coated fabric.I initially bought the 13” wide roll because that is my Epson ET-8550 printer’s maximum printing width (length is customizable). But I like it so much I bought a second 17” wide roll to cut into 8-1/2” x11” and 13”x17” sizes.To get rid of the modest curl, I’ve cut the paper into various sized sheets sheets, then rolled it backwards, but the curl really isn’t a big deal. I really like using it for custom mouse pads. I print a picture, trim it it to size, then mount it to the pad with photo spray mount (works best to spray both photo back and mouse pad front). They look wonderful and the canvas makes a great mouse pad material.They claim it is waterproof but it isn’t (It probably could be made waterproof with a protective spray coating like the “Suregaurd” spray lacquers used by professional photographers).Because this is canvas, and has a fabric like flexibility, it handles and prints exactly like any inkjet paper. I’ve posted a side by side comparisons of the canvas fabric compared to standard glossy paper. Both were printed using the “glossy photo” preset. While the colors on the coated canvas (left) are more muted, they are still good (and looks even better when not being compared side by side to a superior print media). I also did some testing to see which printer settings might give the best result, the picture shows a 4×6 printed on glossy photo paper surrounded by prints made on the the canvas paper using various paper type settings (high gloss, high luster, semi-gloss,matte, plain paper etc), all using “best” printer setting. There is little if any difference, only the “Plain paper” setting had slightly more contrast and saturation because that mode uses the most ink.For those of you who are using a Macintosh computer and an Epson Printer, I’ve decided to share a printing tip in case you haven’t figured out how to print in custom sizes. The way I do it is to open any photo in Apple’s Preview App. Then go to the print dialog box, and select “Paper Size” option. Scroll down to the bottom of the paper size choices and choose “Manage Custom Sizes”. Here you can name and specify the print size you want (limited, of course by your printers maximum width). Hit the “plus symbol” at the bottom and name and define the print size you want. From now on, your custom size will also be available in both preview and the Photos App, (which is my preference).This may work with other printers as well, but I haven’t tried it myself. So far my largest print is a 13” by 70″ panoramic print, using a cut out sheet from this roll.Update: I recently got a good buy on Epson’s canvas media at a local retail surplus seller, and while it is more expensive than this canvas it has a far superior color rendition and dynamic range. The Epson canvas is also thicker and would be more difficult to stretch on a fame. As usual, you get what you pay for.
